The European Commission has launched a smartphone app to provide key road safety information for all EU countries. Find out how the app can help you this summer.

Going Abroad

The app, which is designed for people taking their holidays in Europe, is available for free on Android, iOS and Windows in 22 languages.

As well as road safety information for all EU countries, the app also has a memory game and quiz that is perfect for entertaining passengers on long car journeys.

“The games on the app aren’t just designed to keep the kids quiet. Even big kids like me found the games addictive,” said digital marketing officer, Jemma Redden.

The European Commission has released the app now because in July and August there are on average 50% more road deaths than in the ‘safest’ month – February.

Siim Kallas, European Commission vice-president in charge of transport, said: “The summer holiday period is the busiest time on Europe’s roads. It is so easy to take your car abroad, but many people don’t realise that rules and road signs differ across the EU.

“The ‘Going Abroad’ app provides convenient and user-friendly information to help minimise this risk.”

Of course, the app should never be checked whilst driving – drivers should let the passengers do the job or take breaks from driving to stay both rested and well-informed.

Once you’ve downloaded the Going Abroad app this is the first screen you see:going abroad 3

You then have two choices: Travel games or Safety rules by country.

In the latter, you then have two pop-out menus; country and topic.

In here you can find information on speed, alcohol limits, traffic lights and use of mobile phones. Plus lots more information about seat belts, safety helmets and mandatory road safety information.
